Central Indiana Birth Trauma Attorney
Shoulder dystocia occurs when the baby's shoulder cannot move past the mother's pubic bone during labor. When shoulder dystocia occurs, the obstetrician must make a number of decisions within a limited time frame. In the worst cases, shoulder dystocia can lead to the death of the baby. More commonly, shoulder dystocia can lead to brachial plexus injuries. When the nerves of the brachial plexus are stretched or torn during delivery, the child's arm, hand and shoulder can be severely injured. This condition, known as Erb's palsy, is very often preventable. In some cases, a child must contend with lifelong disabilities as a result of medical malpractice.
If your child has suffered any type of birth injury that requires extensive care, it is important to speak with a lawyer about your child's options. Jacobs Law LLC has the skill and experience to handle a broad spectrum of medical malpractice and birth injury claims.
Shoulder dystocia is a fairly common birth complication, occurring in about 1 in 200 births. Obstetricians must know the factors that make shoulder dystocia more likely. These factors include high birth weight, a pregnancy that goes past full term, gestational diabetes and other factors. If shoulder dystocia is present, there are a number of maneuvers the obstetrician can perform to free the child. In many cases, these maneuvers can lead to the safe delivery of the child. Of course, the obstetrician must be able to (1) recognize shoulder dystocia and (2) take appropriate action when it happens.
Our Indianapolis shoulder dystocia attorneys will take a close look at what took place in the delivery room. If the obstetrician did not act with the appropriate level of care, our law firm will bring a malpractice claim.
